The August Report

After two invigorating weeks off (see idyllic scenery on left), I'm back at work. So I wanted to answer some of the questions I've been getting recently via email and facebook.

1) What am I working on?
I'm actually just finishing up work on my new novel called Half Brother, which will be published Fall 2010 by HarperCollins (in Canada); Scholastic (in the US) and David Fickling Books (in the UK). It's the story of 14-year-old Ben Tomlin, whose psychologist parents are involved in a radical scientific experiment. They bring a newborn chimp into their house to raise as a human baby (a sort of half brother to Ben), and try to teach it sign language, so they can see if chimps are capable of learning language. I'll tell you more about the book as the publication date nears...

2) What's going on with the Airborn movie?
The quick answer: nothing. I've had many, many emails asking me about the film. When will it appear? Can they audition for it? And there is a great deal of incorrect information floating about on the internet. In 2004 Universal Pictures optioned the book for Stephen Sommers (The Mummy movies etc). The Summers Company hired screenwriters, who wrote a script which, in my opinion, bore very little resemblance to my novel. Yes, there were characters who had the names Matt Cruse and Kate de Vries (but they were much older) and yes, there were airships. But there were no cloud cats, and my entire plot had been replaced by a story involving magical urns with glowing runes which contained magical elemental powers, and mysterious priests to guard over them... I didn't like the adaptation, and apparently, Universal Pictures didn't either, because they let the option lapse. In short: no movie is being made, and the rights are now mine again, and I am going to be very picky about who I sell them to next time around. So, if you happen to know Steven Spielberg, or Peter Jackson or J.J. Abrams very well, feel free to pass along a copy of the Airborn series to them.

3) Will I be writing any more Silverwing books?
Maybe. If I did, it would probably be a continuation of Darkwing, because I see a very eventful life ahead for Dusk...

4) Will I be writing more Airborn books?
I love Matt and Kate and would hate to say good-bye to them forever. But Starclimber does leave them at a very interesting point in their lives... I might return to them, but first I have several other stories I'm going to tell first...

  1. Thanks for the info. I'd love to see what Peter Jackson would do with Airborn. I think he stayed true to the Lord of the Rings books.

  3. Oh. No Airborn movie? *pout and stare at screen* That's too bad, but at least you wanted something that didn't have to do with any magical crud.
And please please please please PLEASE (with a cherry on top!) write another Airborn book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please???
Either way, glad you had a relaxing vacation!

  4. Hey Mr. Oppel, thanks plenty for writing a new blog entry! I'm a HUGE fan of the Airborn Series, and I can safety say that Starclimber is one of my absolute favorite books.

But like the other commenters have said: PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER AIRBORN BOOK SOON! They are absolutely fantastic.

The "several other stories" that you mentioned sound fabulous, but another AIRBORN book sounds even better!

  5. "halfbrother" sounds interesting, but i'm completely enamored with the airborn series, i really like all the different adventures and troubles those two get into so, please just one more?

  6. awww.....no airborn movie :( :'( well that sucks, but if you did continue production with that movie, i think people might have "boooed" at the screen. :P

    ReplyDelete
  7. o.O Sommers wanted to do what to the movie?! Wow... thats.... wow.
Half-brother definitely sounds interesting and it'd be great to read how it turns out. Topping Starclimber in another book will be difficult, after you've hit outer space in a victorian style era it's difficult to go farther. If anyone could however I know it's you.

Heres to hoping that Airborn hits the Silver Screen as an adaptation that stays true to the novels.

  8. What advice would you give to aspiring authors, Mr. Oppel? You see, I want to be an author aswell someday. I would appreciatte it soo much.

  9. Hi, Kenneth. I was one of those many people who did e-mail you about the book and im really sad that there is no movie for right now.mI actually did attemp to contact spielberg, which didnt turn out so well. Anyway, im glad that the movie did not turn out with all that magical crud, that would have been terrible. Anyway, i am a huge fan of the entire AIRBORN series, and they are my most favorite books, even passing up the PETER AND THE STARCATCHER'S series. I really hope you do write another book. I live in the U.S., and i even went out of my way to buy your latest book in the AIRBORN series, STARCLIMBER, and i went online months before it came out in the U.S. and bought it from an online Canadian bookstore. Again, please bring another AITBORN book into great consideration,I would love to read another.

  11. I really hope you write a new Airborn book. It's probably one of my favorite series of books alonside the Harry Potter series. I would really hate seeing it end after Starclimber though you ended it extremely well. PLEASE from the bottom of my heart, after your current projects can you PLEASE write a new book for the Airborn series keeping our favorite characters Matt Cruse and Kate de Vries. I have complete confidence that you can pull out another fantastic sequel to this BREATHTAKING series.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I would really love it if you were to write at least one more sequel in the silverwing seqeunce. the ending of firewing was just to sad.

    1. Totally agree on that. I cried when *SPOILERS!**Shade died*SPOILERS OVER**. And now Goth is still out there. With a stolen life. Plus, Griffin is a great potential main character. I think that we could have the Darkwing trilogy with Dusk, then the Silverwing trilogy with Shade, and a third series following Griffin. That would be awesome.

Also, John Williams will score Airborn. No two ways about it. Imagine the "Aurora Theme" he could come up with!!

      Delete
  13. Oh, if Airborn wont' be on screen soon, it can be a good thing, because I could do it later! Ok, i'm beginning my bac at the University in cinematographic studies, but the book enchanted me and i'm sure it can makes a genius movie.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well that sort of sucks that there will be no movie. I was looking forward to that. On the other hand, if the adaptation was that bad. . .I am very glad of it. I don't mind *some* changes/trimming of books brought to the screen, but when they change the plot and characters so drastically, it makes you wonder why they even bothered calling it the same as the book. Why not just make something new?

Anyway, I have finished the first two books recently and have enjoyed them more than I've enjoyed any other new series for a very long time. Thank you for a very good series. I am sure I'll enjoy Starclimber just as much when I get my hands on a copy. :) I do hope you come out with more books, though, as a writer myself I know that may or may not be possible. But at least you know if it does you'll have another fan eagerly snapping up the new offering. :)

  15. I`m really dissapionted about the movie:(,but I would have walked out beacause of the change of the script. I have a pet peeve about messed up storylines. Do they even read the book? Anyway why couldn`t they have just changed the script?

  16. Hey I really love the airborn series and i really hope you make another sequel.

  17. Oh my god i love the airborn series i would really love to see what happens during their engagement and after the marriage. it would be so cool if they marry on the aurora.

  19. Its anonymous, everybody is dying for a new Airborn series book. Your books are truly amazing, they keep me up till 5am reading them over and over, every time I can feel the adrenaline as if I were Matt Cruse himself in another situation fighting off pirates or dealing with Kate. You truly are an amazing novelist. Your books really do engulf me into the storyliine, and I think the movie would be even more amazing with the right director. I have all three books in the Airborn series and I love the cliffhangers between Matt and Kate, but I think that is at least one more story of Matt and Kate and there Engagement and all the problems they face just like old times. and how exactly they would get to be with each other always being in different directions. I feel that there can be one more story after they have reached past the stars.
P.S. what happened to the Aerozan that escaped in the the third books?

    ReplyDelete
  20. OH PLEASE PLEASE WRITE ANOTHER AIRBORN BOOK!!!!!Airborn is one of the best series I ever read and it would mean the world to me if you wrote another one!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I must agree with everyone, its a sad thing to hear that the movie didnt go through but if it was going to be that bad then it might be a good thing. Also as everyone elso said please right another book in the Airborn Series, Im positive you can make it as good as the others if not better!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I never even knew there was going to be a movie but at first I thought "Oh it's to bad thats not coming out" but then I started to think that maybe it was actually a good thing, because how did that storyline relate to the book in any way at all? And oh my gosh Starclimber was so good!! I'm reading 8 other books right now (weird right? well I usually read 12 at a time) but the book was so good you couldn't have separated me from that book even if you tryed to use a crowbar. I think it would be a really cool idea to try and make a fourth book in the Airborn series. It seems that in each book Matt and Kate both reach higher and higher and they encounter a new species and more drama. It would be interesting to see how high they could go next and what new things would happen. And I'm sure going by these last three books a fourth book would also be highly interesting. I'd be interested to see things like how Kates parents would react to her and Matt getting engaged and how his mother would react.

  25. I love the Airborn Books please write a fourth.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Well I'm terribly sad that there isn't a movie on the way but I would've hated the magical reworking as that completely wrecks the charm of the story.
The almost steampunk feel of the airborn books is fantastic and its a world I'd love to read more about even if Matt and Kate aren't the central characters. I've loved all three books so far and I pass the books along when I get a chance.

  27. Half Brother looks great, I can't wait for it to come out. And yes, please write another airborn book and Darkwing book, they are my favourite books ever! I really want to find out what Dusk will do next, and will you make new prehistoric creatures that have evolved?

  28. Hi my name is Marc and I'm 13. The Airborne series was so amazing that I kept reading the books non-stop until I finished! Seriously,I only stopped to go to the bathroom. I think your books are so gripping. It had, and still has me on the edge of my seat to see what happens next. I was so absorbed in the story, and although you did a great job ending it(and you can always speculate as to what happens next)I feel there's so much left. You may as well have said: OK adventures stop here.
you created 3 Awesome books. make another! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE!!!!!!!!!! thank you sooooo much

  29. You are an incredible author and I'm so overjoyed to have come across your blog! I know I won't be the first or last to tell you this but the Airborn series is truly something special. A movie adaptation could be highly successful, a new classic, if the right people are involved and I applaud you for making the right choice and waiting! This story makes me nostaligic about places I've never been and experiences I've never had-the sign of TRUE novel. As an aspiring author, you inspire me. I only ask one thing: don't let your beloved characters gather dust. They can go places, no matter what direction you take them in as long as it's the right one. After all, the world IS round, isn't it?

  34. Thanks to all things holy that the movie is not being made by Stephen Sommers! One of my favorite movie adaptation was Stardust (directed by Matthew Vaughn). It was different than the book but captured the spirit of adventure well. For Airborn though, I would think that it should stay close to the book.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It will be very sad if there is no sequel to Star Climber PLEASE write another one with them marrying or somthing like that, and going on another andventure

  36. Please please please write another book in the airborn series! They're my favourite books. Same with darkwing and the silverwing series. It would be great if you wrote some more. It sucks that there isn't going to be a movie. If there is a movie, I'm sure it will be amazing. Keep up the awesome writing!

  37. I'm 13 and I love your Airborn books. I picked up Airborn at school, started reading and loved it so much that I went out and bought it and Skybreaker after schhol that same day! I finished Starclimber and wanted kore! They are my favourite books. I read them all the time and no one but me is allowed to touch them. If Airborn is made into a movie, please don't let them combine all the books into one movie. It would be better if the movie stuck as close to the book as possible. You are a great writer and I'm going to keep wishing for that fourth Airborn book! your fan, K

  38. It's too bad that the movie isn't working out. I was so excited when I found out it was going to be made into one! Glad they didn't go through with it and ruin the whole thing though. If Peter Jackson does end up doing it though, I think it will be worth while! :) I hope you write more Airborn books. Matt and Kate and probably two of my most favorite fictional characters ever! As a writer myself, though I understand that sometimes you need to take a break. Hope you write more in the future though!

  43. Dear Mr. Oppel,
My mother is a teacher (actually got Teacher of the Year after 13 years of teaching) and she always brings home book orders (where you buy books from Scholastic). I looked through every page of those book orders! Sometimes my mother gets books for free and then I'm in luck! I don't know why I told you that, but anyway, last year on the book order, there was Airborne. I read the little paragraph to the side that explained about the book and I all I could think about was ANOTHER ADVENTURE! I LOVE to read. That's all I do. I had never read a book where the whole book is mainly in the air! I circled it and got it for Christmas in 2008. I started to read the book about 2 weeks before school ended. While I was in Montana in June, I finished the book. I knew that the story couldn't end there. I had also had the Twilight book with me, but I even put that book down to read Skybreaker! I still haven't read Twilight to this day!
I absolutely LOVED reading the Airborne series!! It was an exciting book and I loved it so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE write another book! If you do, I promise that I will drop whatever book I'm reading and run to the book store and buy it!!
One more thing, when I was in first grade, I wrote a 24 page book. It took me about a week to write it. And if a teacher asks us to write a mystery or a biography or even a poem, mine is never less than a page and a half. NEVER!! And I look around at other people and they have HALF A PAGE!!! Is that the sign of a writer? I love to read and write but I never thought that I would be a writer.

  52. Dear Mr Oppel,
I also would absolutely love it if you wrote a fourth book for the Airborn series. I had an idea for a deep sea adventure where Matt and Kate go on a search for the sunken Hyperion. You could call it something like "Seawalker" or something. I would love it if you did something like that. Also, if Nadira came back that would be awesome! Please write another one!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dear Mr. Oppel,
I agree that there sould be another book in the airborn series. This would make my year. I first read Airborn in grade six and i fell in love with the characters(so did the rest of my class) i know that now three years later some of us including me still read our copies over and over again. I think that if you right the forth book you should bring back some of the older characters like Nadira and Captain Walken.
    Thanks,

  54. Dear Mr. Kenneth Oppel
I really do hope there is another Airborn book in the series it's one of the best books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. And it really does suck that there's not going to be an Airborn movie though better no movie than ruining the book. i really hate when movies do that it's an insult to good books. And if you do sign of rights again maybe you should try to include in the contract that you get to decide whats, what though i don't know much about legal rights and such so i have really no idea if that would work or if it's even possible. i'm glad you had a good vacation and thanks for answering so many questions above.

  65. Dear Mr. Kenneth Oppel,
I've never felt such a true connection to a novel despite its fictitious edge; I have grown along with the characters. I remember reading the first novel in my middle school years instantly developing a kinship with the character especially that of Matt Cruse. Now here I am graduating high school and I can't thank you enough some of my fondest memories include reading your Airborn series. I'll never forget them they'll be placed in my heart for a lifetime.

  66. I know you said Airborn might be dead but maybe you should stop trying to go higher and just find new things in the sky for them to explore. New creatures and vehicals too.But still try to do a 2nd trioligy (you could make it conect, not like seprate stories).

    ReplyDelete
  67. I'm really into the Airborn series. Please, Please keep going on with that series. I hope that in the future you will have enough time to write another Matt and Kate book that I will read and enjoy for a very long time.

  70. I would greatly enjoy another book from the Matt Cruse series. I love all the characters with all their unique traits. I especially liked the ending of Starclimber. However, in my honest opinion, write all the other stories that come to your mind first. Writing what their fans want instead of what they wish to write is the last thing any writer could ask for.
